Glamour Reel Moments - Day One

The car showed up before 10:00 AM to take me to the airport. He wasn't supposed to be there until 10:20 so I made him wait. I'm a woman. I can do that. I hurried around, finished getting packing and ran out there with my still-hot flat iron in my hand. (It was too hot to pack and I couldn't very well leave it behind!) I couldn't decide what to wear so I packed my huge suitcase along with 5 pairs of shoes. What? I'd had 7 pairs originally!

I got to the airport and went through security no problem. I grabbed my laptop and purse and shoes off the conveyor belt and went to grab my laptop case when I accidentally pulled off the bag belonging to the woman behind me. She grabbed my knees and tackled me. Oops, sorry lady.

I had a bagel and coffee while listening to an elderly couple sitting near me have the following conversation .
WIFE: The airlines went downhill when they stopped serving food.
HUSBAND: What?
WIFE: The airlines went downhill when they stopped serving food on the flights.
HUSBAND: You want food on the flight?
WIFE: Airlines don't serve food anymore!
HUSBAND: I just got you a sandwich! What do you want?
WIFE: I know you got me a sandwich! I'm eating the sandwich! Don't you think I know I have a sandwich! The airlines don't serve sandwiches anymore!
HUSBAND: Are you still hungry?
WIFE: Turn up your hearing aid!

I love to people watch in the airport. It's a great, fun pastime.

I had to use the bathroom before boarding my flight. O'Hare has those cool toilet seats encased in plastic. Before sitting down, you wave your hand in front of the sensor and the plastic advances, offering you a brand new plastic-covered seat free from any pee drippings. And why is it that there would even be pee drippings in a women's public bathroom anyway? Hello, we're women! We don't have to stand and aim. There should be NO drippage! Are women so afraid of butt cooties that they have to hover and drip all over the seat? Why is this? These are the questions that keep me up at night.

My seatmate on the flight was quiet and kept to herself so I pulled out my newly purchased Nicholas Sparks book (Did I tell you guys that I had a chance to interview him and I forgot all about it and missed the conference call? I'm still mad at myself for that one. I love, love, LOVE Nicholas Sparks's books! They make me cry like a baby.) Anyway, I pulled out my book and we both minded our own business until the last hour or so of the flight when a flight attendant got on the speaker and gruffly announced, "Will you PLEASE sit down! The seat belt sign is on and we don't want you getting hurt or falling on other passengers. So, TAKE YOUR SEAT!" The girl sitting next to me and I looked at each other and cracked up. It just wasn't your typical, happy flight attendant speech. Then we started talking. Fun times.

I got to the airport, met Janna and Jillian, the Suave representatives, and was taken to the hotel.

Bed all to myself!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't have to share with 3 kids tonight!

You should see the size of this shower in person! I bet George Clooney could fit in there with you, Cindy. ;)

AWESOME basket filled with Suave products and other goodies!

Gorgeous, no?

Then I met up with Cindy from HelloDollface.com and Liz from ThisFullHouse.com. We had a yummiful dinner (mojitos) at The Grand Lux Cafe. Now, I'm about to go through my awesome gift basket and curl up with my book so I can finish the last few pages.

I'm sure some of you have noticed that I added a Twitter widget to my blog. If you're interested in hearing the profound thoughts that go through my head every hour of the day, you can follow my Twitter stream. I can update it with my phone! It's like crack and I'm hooked!

Mmmm beignets!

Tomorrow it's off to Lukaro Salon for a day of pampering and then on to dinner at Nobu!

You still have time to leave me a comment on what your favorite wine is HERE. I'll choose the 3 winners on Monday, Oct. 13. Thank you!

Got Milk?

OK, so when I was asked to talk about milk as a nutritious drink, my first thought was - Milk? Ewww! Yes, I'm not a milk drinker. It's true. I really don't like it. However, growing up, my parents made me drink milk every day and now I make my kids drink it. Why? Because it's full of nutrients you need to grow strong and stay fit. It's an easy way to get your daily calcium and vitamin D requirements. Plus, when I pour my kids a glass of milk with dinner, that means they aren't drinking other things like, sugary juice drinks, pop (or soda or coke or whatever you call it where you're from), or other sources of empty calories and artificial ingredients.

As grocery prices rise, it's getting harder and harder to keep food in the house, so you want to make sure you get the most nutrition for your family from every grocery dollar you spend. And for 25 cents, you'd be hard pressed to find a more nutritious beverage. Check it out. And HERE are some tips to help you get the most nutritional bang for your buck while at the supermarket.

And now, hurry and go HERE to sign up for a chance to win free groceries! Every day from now until October 12, five entrants will win $150 in free groceries!

Oops!

I had the opportunity to taste (oops) wine when I was at the BlogHer conference back in July. It was yummilicious! Now, I'm no wine connoisseur despite attending a wine tasting with Ted Allen from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Iron Chef America and Top Chef. I did learn a little about wine though. Like getting the kids to bed is so much easier after you've had a glass or two. And a nice Merlot goes very well with macaroni and cheese (thanks Jenifer for that suggestion!) I also learned that during a wine tasting, you're supposed to taste the wine and not down the whole glass at once or you'll find yourself in the position of having an empty glass and won't know what to do when he says something like, "Now eat a bite of the mango and taste the chardonnay. Do you think it complements the mango?" Oops.

Speaking of "oops", there's a really interesting story behind (oops) wine. In 1994, Jean-Michel Boursiquit discovered that the Merlot of Chile was not made entirely of Merlot, but a blend of Merlot and the lost grape of Bordeaux: Carmenère.

In the 18th century, there were 6 noble grapes of Bordeaux. In the 1860s, a root-feeding aphid destroyed vineyards throughout Europe. The Carmenère was lost. Or so it was thought. However, these Carmenère grapes had been transplanted from France to Chile and have been enhancing the Merlot of Chile for over 100 years. Now they're used in all the (oops) wines. There ya go - not only do I provide a laugh or two, but I'm now bringing you social studies lessons!

Check out the 5 varieties (oops) offers: Sauvignon Blanc, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc Carmenère, Carmenère Merlot, and Chardonnay. And while you're there, take their quiz on the lost grape of Bordeaux! It's hilarious and it'll enter you to win a cool (oops) girl t-shirt, golf shirt, or voluptuous beauty apron.

And just for my awesome readers, (oops) wine is giving away 3 voluptuous beauty aprons! Just leave me a comment and let me know your favorite varietal and I'll choose 3 random winners on Monday, Oct. 13! Good luck!

You guys are just so awesome! I really, really appreciate everyone who took the time to look at all my pictures and give me your 2 cents. You guys came up with a lot of helpful advice, links, and compliments. I'm forever grateful to you!
So, I went with the random number generator again. Here are the winners of the Cadoozles pencils....

Do you have a dvr or On Demand programming? I would get a bunch of What Not To Wear episodes and pick and choose what they say works best for your body type. Are they snarky? God love 'em, yes. But they know what they're talking about. I walked into a store the other day and said, "I want the What Not To Wear Jeans" and the Gap guy took me right to them. Voila! Dark wash, straight leg, Not low rise jeans. Laaaaa!Call the Suave rep and ask her opinion about what everyone else will be wearing. Cause you don't want to go red carpet glam only to find out the celebs and everyone else wore jeans and white button down shirts... you know, to "connect" with us moms. Ppppffff, right?Remember good accessories can make an ok outfit really (sorry for the pun here) sparkle. So you could do a little black dress and infuse color with your jewelry and your shoes. Oh, the SHOES. Realize they will be "dinner shoes." This means they will be unbelievably gorgeous (art!) that will only be comfortable for about as long as it takes to go out to dinner. But Come On - It's Beverly Hills! One things for sure, this Midwest girl will be livin vicariously through you, and counting on the photo recap post. More than anything though, be confident, because that's always classy, no matter what you wear.

Okay, I was voted "Best Dressed" in high school, so I'm the right one for the job! (Of course, I've always thought some of my friends nominated me for it as a joke...uh oh, did I just say that out loud?)In my opinion, for the premiere and after-party, I think you should go with the first black dress (the one with sleeves) and wrap yourself in that gorgeous pink shawl. I think it will look very classy, but not like you're trying too hard.Next, your casual outfit...I love that first little black (it looks charcoal gray in the picture) jacket. It's cute and dressy enough to make the rest of your outfit look nice and classy. Now for the rest of your outfit. I think I would put that jacket with a pair of black pants, being careful to match the colors as best you can (is it gray or black?). Underneath the jacket I would put a bright color, such as bright pink (yay, you can wear pink!) or bright green (because being eco-friendly is so posh!). I'm really not one to wear heels much, but for both outfits, you should wear some cute stylish black heels, preferably HIGH heels. Good luck with that! I can't wait to hear how it all goes!

What Not to Wear

OK, you guys asked for this. I'm warning you - these pictures are not pretty! Now's your chance to turn away! I so need to go on What Not to Wear.
Really, these pictures aren't great because I took them myself. (Like you guys couldn't figure that out. Duh Dawn!) The lighting wasn't very good either. But you can get a general idea...

Here's that pretty turquoise jacket. I thought it looked nice until I saw this picture on my computer and realized it makes me look like a box. EW!

Much better! At least you can tell I have a waist.

I like this one too. It looks a little tight in the pic, but it's just because I tied it back too tightly. Oops.

Dark jeans, blue, slight stripe shirt with wide neck and collar, and brown corduroy jacket. I even accessorized for this pic! Aren't you proud of me?

The black jacket with that bright pink shirt. I actually don't hate the shirt like I thought I would. I do, however, hate the jacket. Blech!

Jeans, rose sweater, brown cord jacket and that scarfy thingy. I'm undecided about this one. I think it looks ok, but I hate sweaters. Ugh. The scratchiness, the uncomfortableness (it could be a word!), the long sleevedness, and the general hotness! Yuck!

And the best one of all! My capris don't fit anymore! Of course, I still have like 50,000 pounds to go, but little by little, right?

OK, I've never been a shoe person, but this past weekend I turned into a woman obsessed! I love these! I'll probably fall on my face if I try to walk in them, but being a short person, I'm willing to take that chance.

Then I found these! I love these too! So I bought them both so I can take them home and agonize over which ones to keep and which ones to return.

Most of you said to wear the first black dress for my red carpet moment and I agree, but I have to have it taken in on top a little bit. I don't think the scarf goes with it though. It's more of a flannel-like fabric. It's got a little sheen to it, but I think a silkier fabric would work better. I think.

So there ya go. I've finished freaking out about the event. I figure - I'm going to be in Beverly Hills! It doesn't matter what I wear. No one's going to be looking at me anyway. I'm getting a couple nights away from cooking and breaking up fights and cleaning up parmesan cheese mountains! Who could beat that?! I'm honored to be invited and I'm proud to represent the average MOM!

Oooo! Oooo! I almost forgot! So, I went to my mailbox at the UPS store to get my packages this afternoon. There are these really sweet guys who work there and today one of them told me, "You look nice today." OK, I was just wearing jeans, but I had switched out a t-shirt for a nicer top. And I changed from Crocs to heels. I think I had on a bit more make-up than I usually do too. I'm pretty sure that's what he said, but what I heard is, "Wow, you don't look as disgusting as you usually do today."

I laughed and said, "Yeah, I ditch the t-shirt and slap on some make-up now and then."

He countered, "No, I meant you usually have more of a casual style." This is a nice way of saying, You usually look like a bag lady who has sparrows nesting in her hair."

He said, "Really, you look great." I believe I responded to this with a snort.

Now, here's the thing. I think he was sincere. Maybe he just said it because it was time for me to renew my box (which I forgot to do!). Either way, I believe the correct response should have been a simple, "Thank you." It is not ladylike to snort when someone compliments you. This is just for your reference if you should ever decide to forego the "Mom" ensemble for something a little classier and someone notices and pays you a compliment. And I highly recommend doing that now and then because nothing can put you in such a great mood as a cute guy saying you look nice.

B > Than Cancer

What do you want to be greater than? Greater than cancer? Greater than violence? Greater than pollution? Kelly at B > Than (Get it? B > Than? BE GREATER THAN. See? She used a math symbol. Very clever, no? It's the little things that amuse me.)

Anyway, Kelly at B > Than, started her store about a year ago where she sells her T-shirts with inspiring messages. According to Kelly, her best selling T-shirt is the shirt that reads "B > Cancer" on the front and "Survive" on the back. And here's the sad thing, the most popular size she sells is youth small for 2-4 year olds.

I thought this would be an ideal company to highlight this month because, as you hopefully know by now, September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Not only can you get a shirt to help raise awareness for cancer (or one of several other causes), but you can feel good doing it since Kelly donates a portion of her proceeds to Cool Kids Campaign. For those of you who aren't familiar, "the mission of the Cool Kids Campaign is to provide kids with cancer a higher quality of life for themselves and their families while facing the challenges of cancer."

Kelly is giving away 3 of her creative, cool t-shirts to my readers! Just leave me a comment here and share your best idea for the next B > t-shirt. If you could pick anything, what would you have it say on the front/and the back? It can be silly (B > normal / freak) or serious (B > fear / hope) or whatever you feel passionate about! I like this one, B > Drugs/Say No. It's my favorite only because it's the only one I could think of! I'm sure you guys can think of more though. I'll pick 3 winners on Thursday, Oct. 2.

And from now until October 15, enjoy FREE shipping on your order automatically at checkout.

Need Fashion Help!!!

I mentioned on my other blog that I'm going to Beverly Hills courtesy of Suave. I'll be going to the premiere of the Glamour Reel Moments films by Courteney Cox, Demi Moore, and Kiwi Smith. Then we'll be hitting the after party at Chateau Marmont. Oo la la, right?

NO! I'm really stressing out about this trip. I mean, I'm looking forward to it and I'm really excited, but I don't know what to wear! Well there's that and the fact that I'm afraid I'll embarrass everyone by yelling out, "Hey Monica! How's Chandler and Joey? Can I buy you a cup of coffee at the Central Perk? Please! Be my friend!"

I am seriously fashion-impaired. You know, I wear jeans, t-shirts and Crocs. Yes, yes, I'm the epitome of glamor. The only good thing about my stress over this trip is the fact that I've completely forgotten about my class reunion and I'm not the least bit worried over what I'll wear there.

Being a stay-at-home mom, I've kinda, um, well, I've sort of let myself go. My daily beauty regimen is pretty much just taking a shower and putting my hair in a ponytail. Voila! Ready to go. I've never been into fashion. I've never cared about name brands. At all. I don't understand why someone would pay 4, 5, 20 times the amount of the generic brand just to have a particular name on their clothing. I'm not saying it's wrong; I just don't understand it.

For example, I had never spent more than about 20 bucks on a purse. When I got my first advance check for my book, I totally splurged and bought myself a Coach purse. Here's the thing though - I was so embarrassed for spending so much on a stupid purse, that it just sat in my room for almost 2 months before I got brave enough to use it. How lame am I?

Well I finally started using my purse and you know what? I liked it. I really did. Until yesterday when the little leather zipper pull came right off in my hand! Now I can hardly open my purse. I have to kinda push the zipper along with my finger and hope I don't pinch my skin in it.

So I went to the Coach store today and a flock of helpful sales people pounced on me asked if they could help me. I showed one of them my purse and said, "The zipper pull just completely broke off. Everyone told me this purse would last forever so I was disappointed to see it falling apart so quickly. It's not that old."
The associate said, "Oh I know it's not old. That's from the spring collection!"

"Um ok, so can it be fixed? Is this under any kind of warranty? Is it normal for it to break so quickly?"

"You'll have to get it fixed."

"OK, so do you guys fix these? Do I have to pay for it?"

"You'll have to send it out to be fixed. I've got to warn you though, it usually takes 6 - 8 weeks."

"Ugh. And you cover the repairs?"

"Well, you have to pay $20 for it. So, do you want to see any new purses?"

"Sure! Please show me some more overpriced bags that will break in a couple months." "Um no. No thanks." Thanks for your help!

So paying more for designer things doesn't always mean you're getting better quality or better service. I guess the extra money just pays for a name and I don't personally think it's worth the money just to have "Coach" written on my purse. And this is why, although there's a totally cute, hot pink bag there right now, I will SO not buy another one. Ticks me off.

This is a perfect example of why I like Suave. Why should I pay 4 times as much for shampoo sold at a salon when I can buy Suave and get the same end result? And as lazy as I am when it comes to my appearance, I have to admit that I feel a hundred times better, more confident, prettier when I do take the time to do my hair, put on make-up and dress nicely. Don't you feel like you could take on the world when you're having a good hair day? And don't you feel like a slug on those ponytail days? I know I do.

So, I'm really trying to make an effort, but I'm completely fashion-inept. When I go shopping, I see what the mannequins are wearing and then I hunt around the racks for the same items. If there are no mannequins at the store, I'm outta luck.

Here's where you come in. I'm sure I've got some readers who have a clue about fashion and I'm begging you for your opinion! I really need help! I bought a few things today, but I have no idea what goes with what? What should I wear? Pretend like I'm your paper doll (only, um, puffier) and come up with a couple outfits for me. What should I keep? What should I return to the store? What goes with what? Do I have anything doable or should I start all over?

I found this scarf-shawl thingy and I loved the variegated pink - dark rose color so I got it. I have no idea what to wear it with!

Hmmm, it's a little hard to tell how this looks from the picture, but it's a cute little black jacket. I like the short cut of it. And the sleeves don't come quite to my wrists (on purpose). What do I wear it with? Do I wear it buttoned or unbuttoned? What kind of shirt should I wear underneath it? Do I wear it with black pants? What if the blacks don't match? Why did I get this???

Or maybe this blue/green jacket would be better? It makes me eyes really green. But what on earth would I wear with this though???

Hmmm this one's kinda low cut and makes me look um, boobish. Definitely keeping this one despite the fact that I'm not a fan of purple.

I don't know what possessed me to get this one. I like pink? I don't know if I like pink on me though!

Likewise, I'm not sure what to do with this. Seriously, I feel like a dork on What Not To Wear. It's sad that a grown woman can't manage to put a couple pieces of clothing together to make an outfit that wouldn't blind a person.

I found 2 pretty black dresses that fit and are (I think) flattering on my pear shaped body.

This one comes with a little bolero jacket. Of course, I could always get a pretty wrap to go over the first one though. Hmmm, I can't decide between the 2. I like them both.

Ugh, and don't get me started on shoes!!!

Please help me! In fact, I have 4 (6packs) of Cadoozles mechanical pencils to give away to the comments with the best fashion advice for me. Cadoozles from Zebra pen are fun and funky pencils that never need sharpening. They have big erasers that work well and erase cleanly. Zebra even has an Eco division. Their eco-friendly pens use 70% post consumer waste including headlights, cell phone material and CDs. Cool, huh? So leave me a comment, help a girl out, and be entered to win one of 4 packs of Cadoozles pencils!

*****Edited***** I wasn't clear about some of my clothing choices there. I need one of the black dresses for the premier and after party. That's supposed to be fancy. I need some "casual chic" clothes for a couple other events. I'm clueless there.

If Lost,Call Me!

Regular readers might remember a review I did on Safety Tats right HERE. Well, I've found an even better product! It's the brand new Quick Stick Write-On tattoos by Safety Tat!

Safety Tat has taken an ingenius idea and made it even better. I thought that the original Safety Tats stayed on really well, but these new waterproof, skin-safe "tattoos" have some serious sticking power! They can stay on for up to 2 weeks (or until you're ready to remove them.) They're like those tattoos bandages you can buy. Do you know what I'm talking about? Those clear tattoo bandages totally stay put on your body and so do these new Safety Tats.

These are great to just keep in your purse or diaper bag. There's no water required to apply these tattoos so you can slap them on your child when you're out and about. If you're like me and you remember that you didn't put a Safety Tat on your child until you're 2 hours into your zoo trip, these new Quick Stick tattoos are ideal.

And here's another cool feature (leave it to moms to come up with these fabulous ideas!) these new Quick Stick Write Ons can be personalized with the included pen. Now, instead of ordering the tattoos with your cell phone number preprinted on them, you get a pack of blank tattoos and you can write any phone number you want on them! You might write your cell phone number when you take the kids to the zoo and you might want to write both your number and your spouse's when you're on a family trip to Disney World. You might want to include a line about your daughter's peanut allergy on one tattoo or a line about your son's autism on another. If Grandma and Grandpa take the kids on a trip, they can write their cell phone number on the tattoos. I love that these are completely customizable! Oh and the pen marks don't smear, smudge or fade at all!

These new Quick Stick Write-On Safety Tats come in a pack of 18 along with a FREE waterproof Safety Tat pen. You can choose from the boy design, the girl design, or a combo pack. And from now until October 6th you can use redemption code 6PACK at checkout to receive 15% off your order! If you haven't been to their site in a while, you'll notice some big changes, like lots more designs and a new shopping site. Check it out!

And, Michele, inventor of SafetyTats, is giving away 10 FREE packs of SafetyTats to my readers! Each of these 10 packs comes with 6 quick stick write-on tattoos and a tattoo marking pen! Just leave me a comment on this post and I'll choose 10 random winners on Friday, September 26th!
