Peek-a-Boo

This past month, I've been able to check out and play with Peek. What's Peek, you ask? Well, let me tell you. It looks kinda like a phone. But it isn't. It's this nifty new device that lets you email and text. The cool thing about Peek is there is no contract to sign. You don't have to commit to a 2 year (or any length!) contract. With Peek, you get unlimited email and texting for only $20 a month! And the device itself sells for $50.

When I first considered trying out Peek, I couldn't figure out who it would appeal to. I mean, the people who can't go a few hours without checking their email or texting friends probably already carry a Blackberry or iPhone or some similarly equipped phone, right? So what other people would like to be able to email and text without the telephone option? Then I looked at my daughter who was texting me from 5 feet away. Bingo!

Plus, I think this is a great option for those who don't want to commit to a contract where they're locked in for any length of time. Peek is really user friendly; it's very simple to figure out, which would appeal to anyone who doesn't want to mess around with a complicated smart phone. It may even work well for those who do have a phone (prepaid perhaps) and don't want to upgrade to a smart phone, but would like the option of checking email. For $20 a month, you can have unlimited email and texting in addition to any phone plan you may already have.

So, how does it work? Well, when you're out and about, you can read and respond to email. When you get back home and log on, your mail will still be in your inbox. I happen to like this because I can go through my mail and double-check that I'm not missing anything. I talked to some friends who really didn't like that, however. They said they didn't want to return to their computer only to see a full box of mail. They'd like mail that's been opened with Peek, to disappear from their inbox. I will admit that I use AOL and I'm not certain it works this way with every browser, but it's something to think about.

I personally think that Peek is a little slow. It takes time for messages to show up after you click on them and it only goes out for mail every 5 minutes or so. I'm used to my Blackberry which is super-fast, so the slowness of Peek irritated me. Today, however, Peek is coming out with an upgraded version called Peek Pronto and as the name suggests, it's supposed to be a faster version of Peek with more options and capabilities.

Because I'm used to a different device, it was strange typing on the Peek, however it does have a full qwerty keyboard and the keys are raised and spaced nicely so I think most people would have no problems. It features a jog-dial on the right side which makes navigating through your email easy. The display is also nice. It's large, well-lit, and the text is easy to read. The unit itself reminded me of a very slim calculator. It's roughly the size of my Blackberry, but it's thinner. I wasn't overly impressed with the battery though. I had to charge it almost every day (more often than my phone).

Overall, I think Peek is a nifty gadget that works well, but it isn't for everyone. If you want to simply email and text, and you don't want any contracts, then check out Peek. It's an ideal solution for you. If you're going to be going on vacation and don't have a laptop (or don't want to drag one with you), Peek would be a great device to have in order to keep up with your mail while you're away. When you return from vacation, you can just stop using it and, more importantly, paying for it, if you want. If you want phone capabilities, Peek is probably not for you. If you want to be able to check your Facebook, surf the web, and blog, then Peek is not the device for you.
Want a chance to try out a Peek? I have 2 cherry red Peeks to give away to 2 readers! Leave me a comment here and tell me how you think Peek would fit into your life and I'll choose 2 random winners on Friday!

looks so cute, I would love it if I could figure it out, especially the no contract thing that is how we use our cell phone as well.

I would REALLY like one of these! I still have the regular phone and texting has become quite a pain, and I don't have the money to Upgrade. This looks awesome!! I hope you pick me!!

This looks really cool! Our almost 10 year old daughter wants a cell phone so she can text all her friends & cousins that have cell phones....I'm not really sure how many of her 9 & 10 yo friends really have cells, but she has older cousins that she emails regularly. This would be really great for her to have though because she will be staying at home this summer while I work. (dad works nights & will be here, but asleep) She would be able to email or text me her 9 million questions instead of making my desk phone ring off the hook. This looks AWESOME. Thanks for the chance to win it!

This sounds pretty cool. If I had one, I'd probably give it away as a gift to one of my nieces (because I already have a Motorola Q which I LOVE). Thanks!

I'm so in! My boy has been asking for a phone, but I think this might be better.

OOOOOHHHH! How neat! I have 2 sons that have prepaid phones, but they only use them to text. They would love to have one!

This would make my life so much more fun because I would be able to check my email even when I am at work. I don't have internet on my cell phone :(

I would love to try out a peek. If I learn how to text, that is. : )

Yipee!! I need a Peek in a SUPER bad way. I am back in the ancient days with a cellphone that (gasp) only functions as a phone. No camera, no emails, no texting, nothing!! *sniff, sniff*

This would be a great addition to our family!! :)

Thanks so much for the great giveaway!!

What a neat idea! I really like the idea of no contractual commitment, a big reason why I got rid of my cell phone. The Peek looks like it would be great for keeping up with my sister, who is never at home, and for checking in on my email
when I'm out sitting at dance practice or waiting for kids to come out of school. Since the display is larger than a phone I might even be able to read it more comfortably.

Hi Dawn. :)

I think that Peek would be perfect for me. I work in an environment where I don't have access to my email but I have a side business that requires me to be able to check it regularly. I would love to be able to stay in contact with my customers when I'm at my day job. That would be fabulous!!!

"pick me...pick me..."

LOL

have an awesome day!!!

Trying to decide if 20 bucks a month is less than what I pay (on average) for my pre-paid cell phone or not. I pretty much just use it to text messages to and from my oldest son. Darn it, Dawn! Now I've got to do Math! BLECH! I'd sure dig the opportunity to try it out, though...

I would like to "peek" at a Peek - it sounds fun.

I think a Peek would cut down on my procrastination, because I could check email from my professors in the morning and not have to turn on my computer, which inevitably leads to me checking blogs and not getting ready...like I'm doing right now...oops! :/

I think that's a pretty neat little device. My 8 year old has been begging me for a cell phone, but I'm not ready to go that far for her yet. I think it'd be totally awesome for her to have one of these though so she can text her friends and check her email without taking over the computer. Hopefully I'll be one of the winners..

I think it would be great for my family as my DH is a pastor and really could use something to check his e-mail on the go - we checked into a data plan, but it cost too much.

This would be perfect! As a member of our local MOMS Club Chapter, I always host activities that require an email RSVP. When MOMS that have RSVP'd don't show up, I am always worried about us missing them since I can't check email on the spot. The Peek would be perfect to check and see if they have cancelled, so we can go on with our activity.

How VERY COOL!! I love reading the reviews on your site. Many times I have not heard of the things or have but just never checked into them.

Anyway, I would LOVE to be the winner of this sleek lil gadget. It could be used in a variety of different ways. I have my lil phone now that i read emails on however, it is rather small, hard to read and well...it is w/my cell service (not a blackberry...I wish I would have got that instead).

As a bus driver for the Mass Transit in our city (near your home I think...you were just in our city at a conference a few weeks/month ago I believe). Anyway....this would work great as I could check things in between routes and on breaks. My children's teachers email me constantly and it would help me stay up to date and get much needed info...and well...it would just FUN!!!

Peek would work so great for me. Right now I have a very temperamental laptop that has no battery. If I am not careful with the power cord it will shut off. Then it takes anywhere from 1 to 5 hours to turn back on. It just doens't want to turn on. It is very annoying when I am trying to catch up on my email and then I have to wait an hour or more to finish reading them.

Oh...this would be sooo perfect for me. My husband and I have been seriously discussing ways to get ourselves OFF the computer (internet). We've realized that our time spent on the internet is preventing us from doing what we really want to be doing, but since we have to have our email weaning ourselves off the time waster has been a real problem. I would LOVE to try out the Peek. My husband and I have been talking about upgrading our phones and getting internet/e-mail capabilities on them. I think having the Peek would be nice b/c I am not tied to any contract. Plus, I think getting a peek at a $50 price is cheaper then upgrading my current phone to something like a blackberry and paying for the additional internet charge.

Anonymous said...

Because my husband's job is crazy, there's a fairly good chance that he'll have to move across the country for work... Which leaves me alone with a newborn and a toddler. I think this would be a great way to feel sane when I'm out and about with the kids: Instant contact with people old enough to read! Plus, instant venting to my husband via email.
So random selector, please pick me! My sanity (or what's left of it!) will love you forever!

The "no contract" part is great. How's it on service area availability though? Being a freelance, and with a family that likes to go away a lot, I find that I just need to check in and make sure there's no emergencies when I'm away - not necessary do work. This would be great. I tried a broadband service for my laptop but there where we go most of the time is out of the service area. If this has a good service area, this just might be the thing for me.

I think a Peek would fit into my life as well as my husbands life very well especially this summer when (hopefully) my husaband will be able to leave work early so we can have some extra family time (he has put in A LOT of lat nights this winter so he deserves to leave early this summer)... he does A LOT of emailing at his job and is tied to his computer.. he has been thinking of getting a blackbery... but the extra $80 a month phone bill is not that friendly to our budget right now.... the Peek would allow him to stay connected to his work and me stay connected with my friends. At a significantly cheaper service rate.

Thanks for entering me and best wishes to whoever wins this fabulouse prize!

I would love one of these - not because I'm addicted to email but because I LOVE gadgets! =)

Oooh, cool! I only started text messaging recently and I love it! It's so addicting. That looks awesome!

This would be great for our family! My daughter isn't old enough for a phone (in our world)but really feels left out of the texting world. If we win, I would be able to have my phone back on the weekends!

Great idea! This is going to really sound pathetic how it can benefit me in the coming months...ready?

The good news is we sold our house. The bad news is we will be moving in with my parents (yes, at age 35) for (hopefully) a short duration of time. I could use this Peek to check MY emails since we'll have to be (gulp) sharing a computer.

Thanks for offering a great giveaway! csaestok@yahoo.com

I'd love to be able to check my email when I'm out and about. I don't have a laptop and this looks like it would be really handy!

I'm thinking this is something I will probably never figure out. My 11 year old on the other hand would love this!

I could really use a Peek! Then my husband could stop complaining about the megabyte charges on our wireless bill each month!

This would be a big hit in our family with a teen and pre-teen both wanting to text friends, the friends they'll leave behind when we move in a few weeks and the friends they'll soon make. As I go back to work full time I would appreciate a way to keep in touch with them.

Stephy said...

Ohh I'd love that!!
All my friends are big on texting and I can't afford to add it to my already cheap prepaid phone LOL.
And checking email away from home would be great to help with the 50 emails from the school LOL.

I love the idea of no monthly contracts especially in this day and age. As a mom of two youngsters this would be very handy for me. Thanks for the consideration!

I am sure I could find someone (me) who could use this!

I would love to be able to check my mail while I'm out. This seems really easy to use which is always nice.

I'd give it to my either my grandparents or my mom, both of whom like email, but don't necessarily like or what complex phones

Brenda said...

Very cool. If I win I need you to come to Nebraska to teach me to use it.

I would love to try this out to see if it would be a good option for my in-laws. All they use is email, so it sounds like the perfect fit for them!

for a sahm who feels like she is never really at home, this would be awesome!

Hmmm, maybe I could finally figure out what all the hoopla about texting and twitter is all about? I am one of the 9 people in the US who still just makes phone calls.
Great site, by the way,

I think this would be awesome for my 12 year old. She enjoys texting but is not crazy about chatting on the phone.

My two oldest kids would love to have one. They aren't old enough to have cell phones, but they are old enough to run around the neighborhood. It would be great to have one of these things to keep up with them or to be able to let them know when after school plans have changed.

This would be perfect for my husband. He never talks on his phone, only texts!

Okay i really need two of these. We don't have cell phones at the moment and I need to get something for my daughters to be able to text. Thats all they want to do. And I think I can afford to do the 20 a month. So please pick me... Thanks Dede

We canceled my cell phone to help save money when the economy took a nose dive. I don't mind using the house phone to make my calls (since I"m a SAHM) but man oh man do I miss the texting! One of these things would be so COOL!

My great aunt uses something similar to receive email only. She doesn't own a computer and doesn't want one. I would love to win one of these for her because I think the additional texting feature is great! Thanks for this review Dawn.

This would be perfect for my mother. She's not quite ready to take on the whole computer thing.
But this would be great for keepng in touch.

I'd like to win one for my friend. We're from the boondocks and she's out of range of getting any internet but dial up.

She needs to come into the 21st century and I bet she'd love one of these. Consider me entered!

I would love the Peek. My current phone doesn't allow me to text or check my email, being a college student, both of these are "necessities".

This would be absolutely perfect for my 14 yr old son. Then maybe he would actually leave my phone alone.

Probably too late to post, but this would be so great to have to organize all those kids that keep showing up in our family!

Thanks Dawn!

Did the winners get chosen and posted somewhere and I missed it?

Oooh, that is totally cool! I'm too late for the drawing, I think (story of my life), but I wanted to chime in anyway! I love gadgets that don't force me into a contract. That is probably why I already have an iTouch and a Kindle! The Peek sounds like a perfect addition to my contract free gadget collection!

Kimberly said...

This is just about the coolest thing I've seen! I am totally going to save for one of these little devices! My kids would be SO jealous! Imagine me, MOM having something better than their kid! I love it!

Wow! This is a pretty neat deal. My texting package alone costs me $10 a month. I am almost ashamed of myself, I like to think I usually know about new gadjits and stuff but this one slipped by. I might actually get one of these!
