Breakfast on the Go!

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

This morning, I must have hit the snooze button at least eight times before crawling out of bed. I looked at the clock and realized I had 20 minutes to wake up the little kids, get them dressed, fed, and off to school. Oops. I’d like to say that this morning was just an isolated incident, but unfortunately, it happens more often than I care to admit. I stay up until 3:00AM or so most nights to work in peace and quiet, but it makes it awfully hard to wake up on time in the morning.

Still, even with the rushing around, I hate to send my kids off to school without something in their stomachs. I mean, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? Breakfast is when you break your fast of 8-12 hours. Decades of studies have shown that kids who eat breakfast are more alert and do better in school. Kids who eat cereal regularly, get more vitamins and minerals than those who don’t since cereal is fortified with essential nutrients, and cereal consumers, on average, have lower BMIs.

So, as hectic as our mornings sometimes are, I insist they eat something, even if it’s just a banana or a granola bar hastily consumed in the car, on the way to school. On the crazy-busy days, we usually grab Pop-Tarts, granola bars, a piece of fruit, string cheese, baggies of dry cereal, graham crackers, Go-Gurt, or even cookies. What? Cookies have eggs in them. They’re totally a breakfast food!

So, what’s your go-to breakfast when you’re in a hurry to get out the door in the morning?

A piece of fruit and a granola bar... or a nutrigrain bar... sometimes I will heat up some of my made ahead pancakes in the microwave and let the kids eat them in the car on the way to school.

I try to always have Fiber bars on hand for those occasions. It doesn't matter what kind....Fiber One, Fiber Plus, Target brand....any of them work. My kids love them and they are so good for you. I eat them for breakfast as well.

Banana and nuked sausage patty. Occasionally I'll manage to toast some sort of bread product for the patty to sit on.

Ours is a bacon egg and cheese bagel wrapped up in tin foil, ready for quick eating in the car.

Granola bars, bananas, dry cereal in a baggie.

There are no rushed hectic mornings here. NOT because I don't sleep too late some mornings, but because my kids DON'T. They are up at 6AM (at the latest) because they are weird. My husband gets them breakfast (I'm so lucky!).

Smoothies! I always have frozen, unsweetened fruit in the freezer. A cup of that, 7 oz of Vanilla (or strawberry) non-fat yogurt, and 1/2 cup of Almond breeze. Yum!

Bananas, Nutrigrain bars, Oatmeal bars (if I've made any lately...) - just something easy they can eat in the car if necessary.

Eggo waffles with peanut butter.

I keep cranberry cereal bars on hand and they eat it every morning. What they get with it varies depending on how late they got up. Usually a bowl of cereal on a good day, fruit and cheese on a bad day.

Daughter always has a smoothie I make it on Sunday and put in five different cups; that way she can just grab one each morning.

We have quite a selection of cereal at our house...if it's not in the cupboard it's stashed on a shelf in the garage. The kids all learned at a fairly young age to get themselves cereal for breakfast. The older ones help the younger ones get bowls down and pour.

This works well until I want to actually make them a breakfast and they say "I already ate"....or "I don't want pancakes I'll just have cereal"

Cyndy said...

Honestly...oatmeal...In about 2-3 minutes, I can have a big bowl made in the microwave...divide it up for each kid and it is sticky enough to not spill...now the fact that my toddler believes in bathing in it, doesn't make it a mess proof go to meal on the go...but it is quick and I can feel good about it, even if they eat it in the van...and have oatmeal on them the rest of the day.

Hantla said...

Cereal or a bagel with cream cheese. Not exciting, but fast!

kirine said...

On the go has two separate meanings here. On the go during the week, definitely oatmeal and cereal. For me, the Nutrigrain bars.

On the go during Christmas/Summer vacation means we're going on a car trip and that will be doughnuts or a sausage biscuit.

Thanks for the giveaway.

By the time I get the kids their very nutritious pop tart or toaster waffle, I generally have time to grab a fiber one or fiber plus bar on the way out the door. Mom of the Year here I come!

A cup of low-fat yogurt with a handful of Kellogg's Cracklin Oat Bran thrown in. I can grab both on my way out the door, and eat at my desk to start my work day. Filling and holds me through until lunch. My grandkids even perfer the Cracklin Oat Bran as a snack over chips and cheese curls.

My hubby makes fun of me because when I go to the store I open a new box of cereal on the way home to snack on. As he's helping put groceries away he always seems to come upon an open box of cereal. Gee....I don't know how that got that way. ;)

My kids usually eat a banana, squeezy yogurt (organic only!) and bagel with cream cheese if we're are hopping in the car. Squeezy fruit sauce fills in those rare times we run out of yogurt. I've been known to just stick a box of cereal on the passenger seat and eat from it until we arrive at our destination. That and a cup of OJ has been my breakfast many school mornings.

I'm embarrassed to say - go to breakfast when we are out of cereal is cinnamon toast (whole wheat toast, butter, cinnamon sugar.)

We are not early risers so I prepare for last minute breakfasts at the begining of the week. I puree fruit in the blender then load it into big syringes (w/o the needle obviously), cap them and put them in the fridge. In the morning, we can grab our favorite fruit already peeled, washed and ready to eat. You can squirt it into your mouth one biteful at a time. Sounds weird but until they invent Go-fruit to go with Go-gurt, its what we do.
