What's for Breakfast, Mom?

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

I get up at 3:00AM, weed the garden, work out, shower, slip on my dress, heels, and pearls, then tie on my stylish, ruffled apron as I head to the kitchen to whip up a batch of eggs benedict and maple-glazed French toast made from freshly baked baguettes. As I greet my six children, one by one, I motion with my gleaming spatula for them to take a seat at my perfectly set table, complete with neatly pressed linens and fresh flowers from my garden.

Yeah right! And then the alarm clock goes off and interrupts that little fantasy! In reality, I don't go to bed until 3:00AM and then I sleep as late as possible until the noise from my fighting kids makes me drag my butt out of bed. One of the little ones will ask me what's for breakfast. I'll make monosyllabic grunts as I gesture in the general direction of the Corn Flakes and the Apple Jacks, while shuffling toward my coffee maker.

Yep, that's pretty much my breakfast routine during the summer. And you know what? I'm ok with that. I know my kids are getting a decent breakfast with vitamins and minerals they need, it's something they can fix all on their own, and I know they're going to eat it because they like it.

For a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card, leave me a comment here and let me know what your breakfast routine is! I'll choose a random winner on Monday, August 16.

lately I have been giving the kids cereal 1st thing, then making breakfast tacos- (usually egg, bean, bacon, and cheese)- once I have my coffee.

Breakfast is my time to catch up with reading various blogs and try not to let let the baby throw his food everywhere.

Weekdays, it's quick and easy. Usually cereal, pop tarts, toaster strudel, & always some fruit they have to eat. Weekends, I love making a big breakfast, pancakes, sausage, eggs, bacon, the works.

My 4 year old is usually the first one up...he usually wants "apple in a bowl" yes, he has to say it like this, because if not, there is the cance I might *gasp* put it in something other than a bowl. Then the 11 year old gets up and says.."I'm hungry, can I have a pop tart?"--which she eats UNtoasted. Unless we are out of poptarts which means she must grumble at me while she has to eat cereal. Yes, my children are weird.

I love breakfast. During the week, it's usually eggs, toast, a sausage patty (they're microwaveable-1 minute each one), and a big glass of really cold milk. The kids and husband all have some variation of this. Weekends it's either breakfast burritos or pancakes.

Breakfast is my husband's job during the week, therefore our son usually has breakfast when he gets to his Nonna's house for the day.

Our morning routine is generally cold cereal with milk. But, when dad is home (on the weekends) he treats us all to something warm - egg sandwiches or pancakes...but those other 5 days - cereal.

You inspire me! A mom with 6 kids can function after staying up till 3... so I have hope staying up till 2 and dealing with my 4 (9mo - 5yrs) the next day. We like cereal. Ok, I like cereal. It's easy for me to serve. They like anything so if I have time we do the whole cook for an hour breakfast thing.

Firelizards said...

Pretty much we do cereal every day. Kids are too small to pour the milk but they can do the cereal themselves!

During the week breakfasat is whatever we can grab and take with us. Sometimes thats waffles, nutragrain bars or packets of oatmeal for the babysitter to fix. On the weekends it just depends on what time we all get up! Cereal is good for dinner too. (i had it tonight!)

It's a good morning if I can grab a bagel on the way out the door!

Kids are grown. But I eat a breakfeast, every day any time I want, anywhere I want. Sometime cold cereal, or oatmeal, or eggs, it varies on mood and now it can have want maybe I'll have a grill cheese sandwich.

On school days my son eats an eggo or a bowl of cereal before I push him out the door to the bus. Weekends at least one day I usually do the big breakfast thing of bacon eggs and biscuits.

Umm Dawn, I hate to break it to you, but you don't want to make French toast with a freshly made baguette. You probably don't want to know that though, huh ;)

My routine? The wee ones get up and play quietly in their rooms - they know not to wake me under penaly of very mad mommy. I get them moving at 7:15. They get dressed and head downstairs while I make myself presentable. I make them breakfast - oatmeal or waffles or omelettes or whatever - then put together snacks and lunch while they eat. Then we run out the door. FAST!

We really do NOT have a breakfast routine... it is whatever the littles ask/demand to eat and WHEN. I would LOVE routine and order to our crazy chaotic mornings... but right now, we don't have it. :P Perhaps once they are all in school??

My daughter loves her cereal. Thankfully she is also a sleeper-in'er! We have an easy routine as she is not in school yet. When daddy is home on the weekend I try and cook up a hot breakfast for the man. :)

Not being an early riser myself, I hit snooze so many times until I know I will be late for work. I run to the kitchen and pop 2 waffles in the toaster for my son. Grab the plate with 1 hand and the fork with the other hand. Run across the room to the fridge and get the butter and Karo syrup. Fix the waffles immediately, they have to be hot. Cut them up and run to wake lil man up. I get a shower while he eats and within 30 minutes, we are out to door! WHEW! Thank God for weekends!!!

My kids go in cycles--for a while, it'll be scrambled eggs every morning. Then it will be cereal. They'll eat the same thing for weeks, then be "done" with it and move on to something else. Of course, they're usually not eating the same thing at the same time--one wants eggs while the other one wants pancakes, etc. But at least I usually have a good idea for a while what they'll want!

Rebecca said...

With 4 kids breakfast is crazy. Each one wants a different thing. We normally have poptarts, waffles, and cereal.

Sharon said...

I am not able to function until at least 3 cups of coffee. My 5 kids can't wait more than 2 minutes to eat after waking. That being said, they have learned to survive during the week on pop-tarts, cereal, juice. Fortunately, their father LOVES a big breakfast on the weekend. While I get to stay in bed, they open Daddy's Big Grand Slam Diner. Pancakes, bacon/sausage, eggs, toast, hashbrowns, etc. Each has their assigned job to do. If only they would clean up the mess!!

Tiffany said...

My routine is kinda like yours except my son can't ever decide what he wants and he certainly can't be trusted with cereal and milk my himself! We are a day to day "routine" kind of gang! lol

Amanda said...

Usually it's cereal, but sometimes I'm feeling generous and I make a batch of Bisquick pancakes the night before, stick 'em in the fridge, and feed them to the kids when the, "We're tired of cereal" whining commences.

Unknown said...

I work 2nd shift so I sometimes don't go to bed until 3am. Needless to say, mornings consist of my husband calling and yelling into the answering machine to wake me up so I can get our daughter up and going for school...then I sit on the couch in a stupor until she leaves...it's cereal all the way for breakfast because if I try to use the stove, I'd set the house on fire, for sure.

I have a huge pet peeve about eating before school..if she skips breakfast I feel like the world's worst mommy so there's a lot of me yelling to "EAT SOMETHING" in the morning as she's trying to get ready. Even a granola bar eases my mom-guilt.

Anonymous said...

My two sons are completely different. One has to eat as soon as he gets up and the other needs to be awake for a while before he can eat breakfast. I let the little one eat a yogurt as soon as he gets up and then when the older one is ready, I’ll make them bowl of cereal, oatmeal, or a toasted English muffin. On the weekends, I try to do a nice family breakfast of pancakes or eggs and bacon.

Breakfast is usually something my oldest one (who's 8) can handle on his own - PopTarts, frozen waffles, cereal (though not on school mornings). We're pretty much grab and go on most mornings. Except for Sundays. Sundays if I'm lucky we'll go out to the local diner. If I'm not so lucky I get to make a big breakfast which usually includes eggs, toast and bacon/sausage. As long as Momma gets her coffee before anyone talks to her it's all good.

Hmmm....breakfast consists of my 2 kids telling me they want waffles, no cereal, no poptarts, no cereal, no not that kind, the crunchy kind, no milk, just cereal. Oh I don't want it, here puppy! I want a poptart now. which they promptly feed to the dog as well. On a given day I'd say that our dog has a much better breakfast then my kids ever do!

From the moment my son opens his eyes (or sometimes while they are still closed), he starts asking for "seeeeer-eeee-llll" (cereal, said in a tired whine). They would like to sit and watch a show every morning while they eat, but we reserve that for just special days. In general, both kids prefer the kid cereals but I have been trying to get them hooked on the Kelloggs Mini Wheats. I personally love the chocolate ones as a snack!!

But that is a big mistake because I start feeling hungry on my one hour drive to work so I end up stopping at a fast food place for some greasy foods that my body really doesn’t need. I need to be more prepared and pack a healthy breakfast that I can eat in the car on my way to work.
