What's for Breakfast, Mom?

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

I get up at 3:00AM, weed the garden, work out, shower, slip on my dress, heels, and pearls, then tie on my stylish, ruffled apron as I head to the kitchen to whip up a batch of eggs benedict and maple-glazed French toast made from freshly baked baguettes. As I greet my six children, one by one, I motion with my gleaming spatula for them to take a seat at my perfectly set table, complete with neatly pressed linens and fresh flowers from my garden.

Yeah right! And then the alarm clock goes off and interrupts that little fantasy! In reality, I don't go to bed until 3:00AM and then I sleep as late as possible until the noise from my fighting kids makes me drag my butt out of bed. One of the little ones will ask me what's for breakfast. I'll make monosyllabic grunts as I gesture in the general direction of the Corn Flakes and the Apple Jacks, while shuffling toward my coffee maker.

Yep, that's pretty much my breakfast routine during the summer. And you know what? I'm ok with that. I know my kids are getting a decent breakfast with vitamins and minerals they need, it's something they can fix all on their own, and I know they're going to eat it because they like it.

For a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card, leave me a comment here and let me know what your breakfast routine is! I'll choose a random winner on Monday, August 16.

We've gotten into such a rut- oatmeal or toast. EVERY single day. Hey, the kids don't like surprises! (And I cook pancakes on the weekend....if I got a good nights' sleep :)

Pick me! Pick me! I could really use $100. I'd probably even spend it on breakfast food (well, food in general for sure), as I have 3 teens and a middle schooler.

I never know what to have available for breakfast. I'm a night owl too so morning repast is not something I'm able to think about, let alone make.

My breakfast routine: Get up and stagger over to the fish tank. Give Ben and Blue (bettas) some food. Turn the light on for Fred (the frog); he has crickets in the tank with him for breakfast already. Follow the 8 cats into the kitchen, open the cabinet and get out a can of cat food. Distribute teaspoonfuls to various bowls strategically placed around the kitchen floor. Go get dressed. Stop at McDonald's on the way to work. :-)

We usually eat cereal. Sometimes eggos and sometimes bagels. But living in Seattle, it's hard to find good bagels, so usually cereal.

I love to cook a big breakfast with the works. My husband and kids aren't big on breakfast. So usually we have a bowel of corn flakes every morning. They are my kids favorite cearel.

Our breakfast morning routine is similar. Me: Did you eat anything? Them: No. Me: Go get some cereal. Them: OK.

Done and done.

I will take a Visa gift card please, and thank you! Steph

My son is very picky so he usually has Go-gurt, a protein shake, or a peanut butter sandwich. My daughter is not so picky so she'll eat anything but just loves bacon. Most days she'll have a waffle with peanut butter or boysenberry syrup or a bowl of cereal. I make an egg sandwich for myself and my husband every morning.

Our breakfast is not so good during school time witch for us is next week...ugh.... most of the time my 8 year old daughter just takes the box of cereal with us to school and eats dry cereal or nothing. We are not morning people.

The Minears said...

Oh goodness, my breakfast routine is waking up at 5 to farm (no, I'm not addicted to Farmville, not at all...), my daughter wakes up at 6, and we eat something. Sometimes cereal, sometimes toast, I made biscuits the other day. In an ideal world I'd be at the gym at 6 and would eat breakfast afterwards. No, strike that, in an ideal world I wouldn't need to go to the gym and would have a maid cook breakfast every morning.

Anonymous said...

Well my 10 yr old has been learning to cook. So lately she will wake me up and ask me if I would like any eggs, sausage, toast. Usually the answer is no thank you it's too early to eat and she goes on about her way. Then she makes just enough that when I do wake up there will be enough for at least 1 breakfast burrito for me. How sweet!! Then on the weekends I get up and cook breakfast, biscuits and gravy are a hit EVERY weekend. Sasha-BCTX

For me the breakfast routine year round consists of staggering my way to the coffee pot & having 3 or 4 cups before anyone else wakes up.

For the kids, I simply point to the kitchen and say "You know where the food is'. They typically go for cereal, yogurt or fruit.

I'm happy if they bother to use utensils.

Megan said...

I am usually up before the kids, (yea, I am one of THOSE people). Actually I work from home so getting up early allows me to get a head start on the days work without the chaos of the kids. But as soon as they wake up, the first thing out of their mouth is "Can I have some cereal?" We are definitely cereal fans in this house!

Sharon W. said...

Stumble to the 3 min. coffee pot and start that and make peanut butter and red plum sandwiches for breakfast. Since I have no kids at home, it does work for me. Please pick me.

It sounds like life at my house! I MUST get to the coffee maker before anyone talks to me or they may regret talking to me.
The kids eat cold cereal every morning. On the weekends we have eggs or pancakes or something a little bit more substantial to vary from the cold cereal routine

Shannon said...

Cereal is large part of our breakfast also. The kids can fix it themselves and they let me sleep!

Morning routine? what morning routine. Kids eat what he babysitter fixes them. Usually something WAY more nutritious then I could fix. I have a cup of Coffee at work.

My kids tend to eat dry cereal for breakfast. They usually wait for someone to take it out for them but sometimes get it themselves.
One of my kids has carnation breakfast (chocolate flavor) almost every morning.

This Summer, our go to breakfast has been cold cereal. This is a treat for the kids, because we don't eat much cold cereal during the rest of the year. During the school year, we eat oatmeal, muffins, eggs, bacon, pancakes, waffles, etc.

Breakfast of champions in my house is: Weekdays - grab a piece of cheese on the way out the door. Yougurt and ceral at work.

Weekends (if gdaughter is here) waffle with cream chees, and every square needs to have cream cheese in it. For me scrambled eggs with some sort of veggie or mushrooms. Yummy !!!

Jackie S. said...

Our breakfast routine is fixing the kids their cereal and trying to keep them awake to eat it so they don't tell me that it's soggy and they need a new bowl!

The Vrabecs said...

My 2 girls are not big breakfast eaters. I am lucky if I can get them to eat a little bit of cereal or some fruit and yogurt. Some morning we opt for dry cereal from a ziplock bag in the car. I know its the most important meal of the day but I can't seem to get them to eat in the mornings!

Joanne Lendaro said...

Breakfast-Ugh, not for me, but living in a house with 4 of the male species, what-ever it is, there must be a lot of it!! We go through a gallon of milk every two days! Okay, enough of the moaning and groaning here's my tip....

Bisquick pancakes the light and fluffy ones, BUT make enough for a small army. Pitch the (if there are any) uneaten ones in a baggie and hide in the freezer. Pull them out during the week and your family thinks you are amazing. It only takes a couple of minutes in the marvelous microwave!

Honestly...usually cereal just about every day, and I tons of it!

Anita said...

Well, mine isn't that great. It will get better soon, when school starts next week. Well, maybe more consistant.

Usually a bowl of cereal and maybe some yogurt. Some Saturday mornings we go to the local bakery and get fresh donuts. Some days I don't get to eat until 10 am. Usually the days I try to exercise.

My kids are cereal eaters! I only cook breakfast on weekends and even then the kids will have cereal while waiting for me to get enough coffee in my system to start cooking.

Our youngest (almost 2) is on a special high calorie diet, so usually I run through a list of high calorie options and see what gets an "uh-huh". Some days that's maple sausage with cut fruit and dry cereal. Others it's scrambled eggs (fried in butter w/ cream added instead of milk - boy they do get puffy that way!), and bites of my breakfast. Our daughter usually goes with cereal/oatmeal/toast accompanied by fruit, sausage or bacon (hey - if I'm making some for lil guy might as well nuke extra). I get to eat whatever he's emphatically refused (aka thrown at my head) or just a cup of cafe leche (half coffee with hot milk and lots of sweetner).

Bianka said...

My kids are young (6 and 3), the only things they want for breakfast are oatmeal and cereal. I'm not a morning person, I'm usually so tired that they get whichever one they want. Now on the weekend we eat really yummy stuff like pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit, bagels...LOL

Breakfast consists of either oatmeal with dried cherries and a spoonful of Nutella, or, Amaretto cheesecake yogurt with granola. Always served with a glass of pineapple juice.

Our breakfast is, if nothing else, routine. My kids all eat the exact same thing every day(the exception being that the fruit changes with the season). Waffles, instant oatmeal, and Nutrigrain-type cereal bars.

I do, however, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to have breakfast for dinner - pancakes, eggs, bacon, muffins, yummmmmm.

Although I work outside the home and am up and at it pretty early, breakfast at my house is also, "grab yourself a bowl of cereal and be quiet!" With my first the focus was on what was nutritious. Now, after 21 years of parenting, it's whatever they'll eat in the morning!

Generally, my kids get frozen pancakes warmed in the microwave topped with peanut butter. My 3 year old 'baby' isn't good about eating meals, so she generally gets a cup of dry cereal and a sippy of milk to eat on the couch while watching Martha Speaks... Something I thought I'd never do, lol. Oh well, she's kid #3... so you know how that goes.

my two oldest are getting to the age that they can pour their own cereal and what not with little to no help from dad or mom. Our three year old not so much. We go through a routine every morning where he first asks for all the junk food in the house and I tell him no over and over and tell him he can toast or cereal or eggs (whatever)...finally we comprimise on something he eats half of it and then asks for junk food again! lol...the other day he asked for spaghetti and I gave it to him...I mean it had carbs, veggies, meat, dairy basic food groups..!

My kids loves Carnation instant breakfast. They get very upset if we are out and they want it every morning...that's fine by me cause I don't think there is an easier, faster breakfast. I hope it's as nutritious as the commercials say it is. At first, I was worried it wouldn't be filling enough and they would be hungry an hour later, but they usually don't get hungry til lunchtime or maybe need a late morning snack. If it weren't for Carnation, we would probably be late for school all the time.

Breakfast may be waffles, bagels, pancakes, oatmeal, cereal, yogurt and usually a vain attempt to get them to eat fruit. We make pancakes on the weekend and freeze them. We're a cold cereal kind of family! An occasional bowl of oatmeal in the winter. An occasional pancake or egg bake breakfast on the weekends! I'm not much of a morning eater myself, so I keep NutriGrain bars and bring those to work.

Breakfast at our house is generally frozen pancakes or waffles. If we are rushed, then it's cereal or a cereal bar. Thank goodness my kids are teens and can whip up their own breakfast if they want something out of the ordinary.

Anissa said...

Hmm routine...what's that? I usually sleep as late as possible and then throw a baggie of cereal in my lunch cooler w/ a small bottle of milk (those single serving ones they give kids in fast food places are the perfect size and I can reuse them a couple times before tossing). Then I eat at work. If I'm out of cereal (currently the only one I like is a Kirkland one w/ cornflakes, macademia nuts, & craisins), then I'll make a piece of toast (or a bagel) to eat on my walk to the bus.
My husband usually feeds the kids, and my son (4) is a huge breakfast eater and will eat pretty much any breakfast food we have.

JamieG said...

Breakfast at my house varies greatly based on what's around the house and who is eating. We tr to do one big family breakfast on the weekends, but during the week it's a fend for yourself kinda thing. The kids usually eat cereal and the adults eat whatever strikes their fancy...cold leftover pizza, toast, cereal, hot dogs...really anything goes.

Allie K said...

Our breakfast routine usually includes some type of "FAST food" meaning you better eat it fast because we have to leave in 10 minutes.. usually they will eat cereal, poptarts, frozen pancakes, leftover pizza...

If everyone gets out of the house with something to eat I'm happy.

We have a dairy farm and the cows and heifers get "breakfast" long before we ever think about it for ourselves! Over the years my kids have gotten very good at pouring a bowl of cereal (why my oldest son eats it dry, without milk, I have NO clue!! - There should be a law, right? = Kid who lives and works on dairy farm MUST have milk on cereal!!) or they make toast, or waffles or pancakes (the variety that come out of the box in the freezer!). Breakfast is all about "easy" around here, and getting on with the many things that need to be done each day.

When my 2 year old is awake and I've gotten him out of the crib, the oldest likes to get him cereal or powdered donuts too (he's lactose intolerant, so no yogurt for him!). If I get to eat, it's usually 2-3 hours later. Now, if it's a weekend I'll fix pancakes or biscuits and gravy.

Urgh breakfast routine, does my kids running in my room at 6 am and telling me they want a snack and me sending them out to fend for themselves cause at 6 am I am not awake count???

We do eggs, bacon, and juice for breakfast. And by eggs, bacon, and juice, I mean PB&J sandwiches... it's close though! I mean, peanuts are protein like eggs, and fatty like bacon... and jelly is sort of a fruit so that's almost the same as juice. And then there's bread... which is just un-toasted toast. Plus PB&J is much quicker to make than a full breakfast.

Stacy said...

I'm pretty lax about breakfast. I don't mind making eggs or waffles if my kids want them, but usually it's cold cereal and a glass of milk or juice. I wrack my brain daily for lunch and dinner ideas, so it's nice not to stress too much about what to eat for breakfast...especially when I'm still half asleep!

The breakfast routine here, all depends on how much sleep i've gotten the night before. Usually its not much sleep, so breakfast is usually me telling my son he can have cereal, oatmeal (made in microwave), or frozen waffles. These are all things that require little effort on my part while i'm still trying to wake up.

dark_chocolate said...

As long as I add some yummy fruit to my flakes, I love cereal in the morning!

Actually, our breakfast in the morning sounds a lot like yours! At least in the summer. They are usually making waffles these days, and the 3 year old usually brings a yogurt tube to my bed for me to open for her!

Nicole said...

We're addicted to bagelfuls, esp since they're easy to eat on the run. We rarely get up and get ready in time to sit-down and eat.

JenJo said...

My children are like hobbits, they eat two breakfasts. The first one is at shortly after waking up and generally involves cold cereal. The second one, during the school year, is eaten at school after they arrive. Rumor has it that the school gives them things like sugary muffins and doughnuts. So I'm super thankful for cold cereal without a ton of junk in it!

My husband and I usually have a 1/2 a bagel each morning. I like it with jam and milk, while my hubby likes it with cream cheese and coffee. On the weekends, we enjoy Frosted Flakes.

My kids are old enough to make their own breakfast. My son gets up early and makes a frozen waffle. My girls sleep in and sometimes get up early enough to have some cereal for breakfast. Sometimes it ends up being breakfast for lunch. I eat a bowl of cereal while working on my blog, dishes and laundry.

Breakfast could be just about anything from cereal to a bowl of random fruit goodies or left over pizza lol.

Chris Davis said...

Our breakfast is usually oatmeal, started in the rice maker the night before, crustless quiche made the night before but baked that morning, and juice. Breakfast I have down: it's healthy and filling and a great start for our day, with little effort. It's the lunches and snacks I really struggle with. And the house cleaning.
I could so really use that gift card. Thanks!

On weekdays the kids eat cereal, grits and bacon, or toast...stuff they can fix themselves. On Saturdays we might have scrambled eggs or a breakfast casserole, or pancakes...something a little more special. Sundays we usually have a donut at church or pick up a mcmuffin on the way to church...that is our routine.

Now that the kids are old enough to fend for themselves (12 and 14), they will usually toast frozen waffles or get some cereal. In the winter they will even go as far as making some oatmeal.

My family consists of just the two of us ... my hubby and myself. So our morning routine is to grab a cup of coffee and enjoy our backyard for a few minutes before starting our day (we work from home). And that's about it. We don't typically eat breakfast but sometimes on a weekend we make a brunch ... that's a lot of fun and relaxing when we have the time.

Unknown said...

Kinda boring. Cereal every day. For the first day of school I am going to make them waffles.

We don't have kids here anymore except the 3 grandkids every weekend. So during the week days I get up and drink my Diet Coke for breakfast. Sometimes I will eat toast. On the weekends with the little ones they just have to leave me alone for about 20 minutes and then whatever they want I make. Pancakes, Eggs, Omeletes, you name it.
We do live at the lake so some mornings when I have stayed up late I put out bowls, spoons, and cereal and let them fix their own.
But I won't do anything until I get my 12 oz. of diet coke drank :)

Here's my morning routine:

1. Get up.

2. Sit on side of bed and groan.

3. Go to bathroom and put in teeth.

4. Stagger into kitchen and get breakfast supplies out of refrigerator.

5. Smear refried beans on tortilla.

6. Sprinkle grated cheese on beans.

7. Pour salsa on bean/cheese stuff.

8. Wrap in paper towel.

9. Lather, rinse, repeat.

10. Heat in microwave for 3.5 minutes.

11. Eat burritos with diet Pepsi and lime while reading book of the day, currently The Magicians by Lev Grossman - sort of a Harry Potter for adults.

11. Go to work.

I don't function in the morning at all. It's either Nutrigrain bars, dry cereal with cups of milk (preschoolers with bowls of milk is too much mess for me in the morning), or instant oatmeal and yogurt if I'm feeling super energetic. (me)oh,how about eggs???
(Wyatt) i'd like fruity peddles
(me)Jelly toast and yogurt???mmmm sounds good!
(Wyatt)fruity peddles!fruity peddles!fruity peddles!
(me) go get a spoon.....
Then there is the rest of the kids and their odd breakfast choices:Ashlei(16)-Ramen noodles,Chris(10)-mustard and ketchup sandwiches and Alyssa(9)- sliced cucumbers and red peppers!

My breakfast routine is simple - kids fend for themselves. Once in a blue moon I'll get the notion to make something - pancakes, eggs, etc. - and get frustrated trying to make it all cook to be ready at the same time, take 30 minutes to make it all, only to have it wolved down in 5 minutes flat. So breakfast around these parts is cereal (milk is optional), pop-tarts, or toast.

Anonymous said...

We don't really have a breakfast routine... breakfast at my house is usually a bowl of cereal or pop tarts!

Yeager Family said...

Oatmeal or Cheerios. We're boring. Nothing high in sugar. A 2 year old doesn't need that.

Kerry said...

More often than not, my kids have a bowl of dry cereal for breakfast. I do offer them milk to pour over the cereal, but they both like it dry. They then proceed to eat the cereal one piece at a time, which can take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. We usually run out of time and I end up dumping the cereal into a ziploc baggie. Then I have them hurry up and brush their teeth and get dressed before resuming their breakfast in the car on the way to wherever the heck it is we're going.

Wow! My routine starts at 5 in the morning, usually snoozing the alarm clock until 5:30. By then the dogs are wide awake and needing to get outside. I take them out, stay with them so they don't leave the yard, then go let the chickens out into their pen, feed them, and collect eggs. I bring the dogs back in, feed them and the cat and the fish, try to remember if I took my prescription, then dash through the shower, get dressed, pour cereal into a bowl, get dressed, head off to work, and stop at McDonald's because I forgot my bowl of cereal on the counter.

My usual breakfast consists of whatever I can shove in the toaster and eat in the car....I enjoy my sleep too much to get up early enough to cook! For my hubby's benefit, once every month or so, I make a MASSIVE batch of breakfast burritos and freeze them. He microwaves them and eats them in the car while he's driving.

My morning routine is exactly like Joy #27... dry cereal for kids during week (they don't like the crunchiness to get mushy) and on weekends if I do cook, they eat cereal while waiting for me to consume enough coffee to safely operate the stove! I do envy those perky morning people, but then they wouldn't be all motivated at 1a.m. like I am!

Breakfast routine: Whatever is on the "kids' shelf" is what they can eat for breakfast. This consists of cereal, cereal bars, granola bars, sometimes mini coffeecakes. Once in awhile, I'll by a treat of Toaster Strudels. Of course, I always have Entemann's chocolate covered devil's food donuts in the freezer, but they are only allowed those once in awhile!!

Speaking of that "kids' shelf", it's getting pretty empty, so I'd love a $100 gift card to replenish!!

breakfast? what breakfast? im usually unaware that my 6yo is even up until at least 10-11am. rather than wake mom, she just opens the pantry door and helps herself to a box of whatever cereal suits her that morning and carts the box off to her room to munch. she isnt a big eater, so munching suits her just fine. and if mom remembers to leave her a glass of milk in the fridge before going to bed the night before, she will grab a bowl out of the dishwasher and pour herself a bowl of cereal with milk.

Anonymous said...

Every morning my 4 year old comes into my room and says something like,"the timer says 7 two dots ee, is that the time to wake you up?" Eventually he gets to "eight two dots oo" and I get up. Our cereal box to person ration is to 1 so it takes a while to pick. My 4 year old is very helpful. "Put milk in my cereal and juice in my cup," he says, which is good because as alert as I am in the morning I might do it wrong. I pray over the cereal and ask God for guidance and a good day. Then we chow down.
